Hans Liwång was born on October 9th 1974 in Stockholm, Sweden, and sailing, boating and boats has since then been an important part of his life.


In 1995, after 14 months of conscript service in the Royal Swedish Navy, he began his Engineering studies at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). Parallel to his studies at KTH Hans also studied Statistics, Business and Administration and Philosophy at Stockholm University.


After graduation Hans Liwång participated in a 6 month multi-company trainee program hosted by the Swedish Naval Engineering Community. Hans Liwång’s focus in the program was hydrodynamic calculations and testing and he was a part of development teams at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), Rolls-Royce/KaMeWa Propulsion and SSPA Hydrodynamic design. After the trainee program Hans Liwång started working for FMV Naval and Marine Command. At the command Hans Liwång was the surface vessel stealth coordinator for vessels such as the Visby Class Corvettes and the Stockholm Class Corvettes.


In 2001 Hans Liwång was offered a teaching position at the Department for Naval Architecture at KTH. This was a perfect possibility to get wider experience and Hans Liwång left FMV to teach Ship Structural Design and the art of hull drawings. The career at KTH was however, in 2002, cut short by the department’s re-location and merger with the Department for Shipping and Marine Technology at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.


2002 to 2010, Hans Liwång, was the Director of Military-Technology Studies at The Swedish Defence University (SEDU former SNDC). The position included teaching, Military-Technology curricula development, pedagogy development and implementing changes to the Military-Technology education in order to facilitate the college’s transformation to a civilian accredited University College. Since 2010 Hans Liwång is a full time PhD-candidate in the area of risk analysis for naval ship design. The Research project is performed in cooperation with Chalmers University of Technology. Hans Liwång has also been responsible for the department’s cooperation with Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, since 2003.


Parallel to his employment at KTH and SEDU Hans Liwång also has been active as a Naval Architecture consultant with assignments such as structural analysis of sail yachts and design of pleasure crafts.
